A land not mine

by Anna Akhmatova

A land not mine, still
forever memorable,
the waters of its ocean
chill and fresh.

Sand on the bottom whiter than chalk,
and the air drunk, like wine,
late sun lays bare
the rosy limbs of the pine trees.

Sunset in the ethereal waves:
I cannot tell if the day
is ending, or the world, or if
the secret of secrets is inside me again.

  1. Lovely pome, thanks. Where is the photo from? There appears to be an oceangoing vessel in a river type thing in the background. India, from the look of the boat (!), but where? One is consumed with c.

    1. Thanks Ludwig for stopping by! Anna Akhmatova always is very evocative. This photo was taken on the banks of the river ganga in Calcutta when I was holidaying there this summer. Yes, looks like an ocean-liner type but honestly, I don’t know. I was only watching the girl, the water and the frame was just so right.

Let me know what you think.
